Introducing the New Teen Studio

If you visit the Urbana Library in the late afternoon you will notice a thriving teen population congregating around the upstairs nook and among the tables and stacks in the Young Adult section.

Last year, FURL approved funding to update the upstairs nook and turn it into the new “Teen Studio.” The teen services librarians designed the space to create a specific area for teenage patrons to hang out, do homework, and socialize. The Teen Studio now includes large colorful signage, new comfortable seating, televisions, and a gaming console.

Designated teen spaces are a growing trend in public libraries. According to the Young Adult Library Services Association, teens need libraries. Approximately 14 million middle and high school students are on their own after school, with 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. as peak hours for juvenile crime. Furthermore, 8 out of 10 Americans indicating they want children and teens to have a safe place or organized activity to go to after school.

The new Teen Studio is your FURL dollars at work. The librarians have put a lot of time and effort into positive and educational programming for teens. The Friends of the Urbana Regional Library is excited for the changes and look forward further supporting and promoting Urbana’s teen services.
