Recently, we had a chance to sit down with Stephanie Yates, Branch Administrator at the Urbana Regional Library (the role she has been holding since November 2021) and “ex-officio“ member of FURL, to talk about her work and her passion for books.
Thank you, Stephanie, for answering our questions and supporting FURL in your role!
(Interview compiled by FURL Member Diana Manevskaya)
Please, tell us about your role in the library operations and connection to FURL.
In my position as Branch Administrator of both the Urbana Regional Library as well as the Edward F. Fry Memorial Library at Point of Rocks, I manage the daily operations, provide input for decisions made at an organizational level, and work to develop and train staff to meet the mission and goals of FCPL.
I would consider myself an unofficial official member of FURL. My job is to provide support and input on the needs of the library.
What do you consider to be the best part of your job?
Hands down, the very best part of my job is the variety. I love the number of things that I am able to do in my position. I also love the connections I make, with our patrons, as well as with my staff. I love public service and feeling like I am truly making a difference in people’s life, and there is no better feeling than that.
From your FCPL* perspective, why are communities like FURL important for the libraries?
The library appreciates all the financial support provided by FURL. However, it is not about the money. Having a group of people who care deeply about the library and the impact it has on the community is priceless. FURL members are also so important for spreading the word about library services. We are so much more than books, and we love to show it off to our community!
Your job sounds like it can be quite demanding! How do you maintain work-life balance?
I truly love what I do. I think that makes a huge difference in just how I perceive the idea of work/life balance. For me, I am more successful and feel less of need to take work home, when I make to-do lists and use my planner. I love my planner! Creating fun things for my planner is a hobby of mine. Also, I love being home and spending time with my husband, and I try to protect that time as much as possible.
What recently read book did you enjoy and would like to recommend to our members?
My all-time favorite author is Colleen Hoover. I had an amazing opportunity to interview her last year for an event. She is just as kind as she is talented. Her new book, “Reminders of Him,” is excellent. Her books are always fast paced, characters are driven and they always leave me wanting more.
Many thanks, Stephanie! See you around the library and at our FURL meetings! Here are a few short questions for a wrap-up.
What do you prefer, electronic, audio- or physical book format?
E-Books! Paperbacks are a close second.
Paperback or hardcover?
Paperbacks!
Do you judge a book by its cover?
Absolutely! I love book covers!
